5 Free Ways to Exercise

Working out alone can get lonely and boring, but workout classes can be expensive. If you’re looking for ways to exercise, get fit and meet people, there are a number of options which are free.

These 5 events, classes and groups offer weekly workouts from running, yoga, boot camp and free running, giving you a chance to find your fitness community and get fit without expensive fees.

1. Parkrun

Parkrun is the biggest weekly free 5km. It’s hosted every Saturday in various parks around South Africa – there are currently 107 locations to choose from. Nearly 400 000 runners have signed up for Parkrun and its open to walkers, prams, and dogs. The runs are timed so you can track your progress and if you can’t find a run near you, you can request one or help set it up in your area.

2. Lorna Jane Active Living Room

The Lorna Jane Active Living Room is based at Lorna Jane store at the V&A Waterfront It’s a space where women are able to embrace the Lorna Jane philosophy of Move, Nourish, Believe by enjoying free workout classes, refuelling at the Nourish Bar and even doing a spot of shopping in the store.

There are 1-3 classes daily from Monday – Thursday and they include Yoga Classes, Pilates and BBG workouts.

3. Adidas Runbase

Adidas Runbase is part of Adidas’ global campaign to unite and support runners. There are currently two Runbase locations, one in Braamfontein, Johannesburg and one at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. 4. Parkour South Africa

Parkour; also known as free running is a sport where people move rapidly through an area, typically in an urban environment, negotiating obstacles by running, jumping, and climbing.

There are Parkour groups throughout South Africa where people come together and train. Some groups like the Pretoria Parkour Group host weekly training sessions open to anyone who wants to come and learn and get better at this sport.

5. Running Club Time Trials

Running Clubs are a huge part of the running community in South Africa. Most running clubs host weekly time trials ranging from 5km -8km in distance. These time trials are open for anyone to join, you do not have to be part of the club. They’re a nice way to meet fellow runners and they provide a bit of a race feeling, giving you the push to run harder.
